A. J. Drury Deliveries was set up by Adrian Drury in December 1987.
Earlier that year he had started working as self-employed mechanic, but it was his
ambition to be his own boss since leaving school.
He bought his first commercial vehicle, a van, just for tools etc, but by chance
a contract came with it to deliver daily newspapers from the wholesalers to the newsagents.
Following this he was also being asked to take on other delivery work for other clients
too (whom he still does work for to this day) and so, A. J. Drury Deliveries was
It took three years before Adrian felt that he had built up a big enough customer
base to be able to sell his paper contract and concentrate on haulage. He then bought
his first flat bed truck (The majority of the customers were then, and still are
today, engineering based and this is what they were asking for).
Although this looks like it was a big step to go from mechanic to running a haulage
company, it appears that transport is in the blood for the Drury name. Adrian’s great,
great uncle delivered Nottingham lace to Manchester on a Horse and Cart 100 years
ago, and as far as we know three generations, including his dad, have worked on the
railways... so maybe he is just carrying on the family tradition!
